Duda/Paine Architects, LLP is a design-architecture firm specializing in corporate and institutional design. Turan Duda and Jeffrey Paine formed the
partnership in 1997 on the shared conviction that great modern architecture is inspired by the client's own vision. "Every corporation and institution
has a guiding vision of what it represents and what it wants to achieve," according to Mr. Duda. "Our mission is to give that vision public expression
in buildings that are at once timeless, functional, and beautiful." Toward that end, Duda/Paine Architects involves its clients in every phase of the
design process, from preliminary sketches to occupancy.
In an extraordinary first six years, Duda/Paine Architects was invited to enter national design competitions for two major commissions. The first was
Gateway Village, a $400 million urban, mixed-use "village" in the heart of Charlotte that includes Bank of America's Technology Center. The second was
the 1.2 million square foot National Headquarters for Cox Enterprises in Atlanta, Georgia. The young firm won both commissions and has successfully
completed the design of each of these major projects.
The Duda/Paine office is currently also at work on some dozen additional commissions that include urban and institutional master planning, office buildings,
and academic facilities. The firm has successfully master planned a major portion of the downtown Durham area and is the Master Planners for the North
Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. They have several important projects under construction. These include the Albert Eye Research Center at Duke
University Medical Center, the Welcome Center at North Carolina School of the Arts and the National Headquarters of Pier One Imports in Fort Worth, Texas.
The firm was recently selected to design a new Center for Integrative Medicine at Duke University Medical Center.
Jeffrey Paine and Turan Duda have each practiced architecture on an international scale for two decades before creating their partnership. Both Mr. Paine
and Mr. Duda, as Project Manager and Design Team Leader, respectively, worked on the 8.6-million-square-foot World Financial Center and Winter Garden in New
York City, which houses the headquarters of American Express, Merrill Lynch, and a number of other corporations. The Winter Garden has become one of the
most frequented public spaces in Manhattan, with more than 3 million people attending its arts events alone in the past decade.
Noteworthy among Mr. Duda's other projects as a Design Team Leader for Cesar Pelli are several landmark skyscrapers, the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Osaka, Japan, and the Chubu Cultural Center in Totori, Japan. Mr. Paine managed the design process for many of the firms academic projects. These include
buildings for Yale University, Cornell University, The Institute for Advanced Study, Trinity College, Duke University, and Roger Williams University.
Duda/Paine Architects is located in Durham, North Carolina. Mr. Duda, who grew up in Durham, and Mr. Paine chose the location for both personal and
professional reasons. "Historically," Mr. Paine said, "architectural distinction has been a privilege of centers of enlightenment and economic strength.
The Southeast has achieved the level of economic and cultural vitality needed to sponsor a regional renaissance in American architecture into the next
century. For architects, it's an exciting place to be living and working."
